Adult Volunteer Opportunities at The Wyandot County Museum

July 29th, 2009 Posted in Uncategorized

The Society will work with each volunteer staff member to find a project that will fit his or her interests and skill levels. Opportunities are available in many areas of museum management.

Collection Volunteers

The Society holds a vast collection of artifacts, documents and photographs pertaining to the history of Wyandot County. These items need special preservation care to lengthen their life spans for as long as possible. Volunteers in this area will work directly with the collections and experience minimal public contact. No previous experience is necessary.

The Society has initiated a massive re-registration project. The Society will re-register (accession) every item it possesses. Volunteers will re-number and complete an accession form for each item. The information from the accession forms will be entered into the computer using “PastPerfect.” Volunteers in this area will have minimal public contact. Some computer experience is helpful if using the “PastPerfect” software.

Education Volunteers

Tour guides will take visitors on a tour of the facility, explain the history of the building and interpret the exhibits. Tour guides will help visitors explore their questions about Wyandot County History and ensure that visitors have an enjoyable and educational experience. Tour guides will have daily contact with the public. No previous experience is necessary.

Exhibit researchers and designers will create interesting and educational museum quality exhibits. Researchers will use the museum’s resources to find and document information for the exhibit. Additional research outside of the museum will probably be required. Exhibit designers will develop a layout plan for each exhibit. Exhibit researchers and designers will work with the curators and the Exhibit and Education committee of the Board of Trustees. In general, no experience is necessary, however an art background may be helpful for exhibit design.

Volunteers will be needed from time to time for special educational programs, such as the Wyandot County Junior Historical Society or Regional History Day. Volunteers for such programs will have extensive contact with the public. No previous experience is necessary, although a background in education may be helpful.

On-Call Volunteers

The Society holds special functions that require additional volunteer staff for a short amount of time. Perfect for busy people, On-Call Volunteers are needed only for specific time periods; to bake a pie for the Ice Cream Social, or to work a shift at the Overland Inn Dinner, for example.
